How to build your own: walking school bus

Create your own walking school bus. Designate an adult as the “driver” as well as a bus stop location. Kids who want to walk to school can meet there and know that a responsible adult will make sure the children obey traffic rules and arrive at school safely. You can organize a walking school bus with friends and neighbors. You will help ease traffic congestion at the school and it is great exercise!

Thank You Volunteer Parents!

Many thanks to all the parents who helped with our safety blitz this past week. Special thanks to Amy Fugal, Jen Cox, Audrey Barton, Rebecca Campbell , Kelsey Watson, and Julie King. And thanks to all the parents who honked for going 20 mph. Please remember to slow down, buckle up, and watch for walkers!

We had a great turnout for our Walk With a Cop program. For all of those who walked during A track, an article about our Walk With a Cop appeared in the Daily Herald today! Check it out to see if a picture of your child made it into the newspaper! And thanks to Officer Champagne and Officer Chuchran for making this program such a success!

Riding a Bike Safely to School

  • Always wear a bicycle helmet, no matter how short or long the ride.
  • Ride on the right, in the same direction as traffic.
  • Use appropriate hand signals.
  • Respect traffic lights and stop signs.
  • Wear bright colored clothing to increase visibility.
  • Know the “rules of the road.”

Walk on!

Remind your child to make sure to sign their class list every day that they walk or bike to school this week. The class with the highest percentage of walkers will earn an ice cream party!

Walking to School Safety Tips

Tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (www.aap.org)
Walking to School:
  • Make sure the route to school is a safe route with well-trained adult crossing guards at every intersection.
  • Be realistic about your child’s pedestrian skills. Because small children are impulsive and less cautious around traffic, carefully consider whether or not your child is ready to walk to school without adult supervision.
  • Bright-colored clothing will make your child more visible to drivers.
